As the festive season gets underway, with work parties in full swing at various venues across the country – often fuelled by alcohol – it is easy to get carried away after a few drinks.

According to employment lawyer Priya Cunningham, you could pay the ultimate price and lose your job, if you don’t play by the rules.

In an interview with the Daily Record, Cunningham, an employee at Watermans Solicitors, warned that while you are at Christmas parties held by your company the rules of “company time” apply. This implies that your “conduct on a night out” can have damaging implications for you and the company’s reputation.

She explained that, “Bosses are also vicariously liable for their employees’ actions. If an employee assaults someone on a night out, leaving them with a life changing injury – such as brain damage – the employer may also be liable for their actions.

“It’s important to get advice from our employment law specialist if you’re facing the sack after your Christmas work-do.”

Other actions that can get you in trouble include harassment, breaking the rules of health and safety and taking illegal substances.

This is not to say you shouldn’t enjoy your Christmas party – you certainly deserve to reward yourself for a year’s hard work – but do so responsibly.
